What is Advocacy?
Advocacy is a way to help Carers have a stronger voice and to have as much control as possible over their own lives. Our Support Workers can do this by communicating on your behalf with professionals and services and will help you to get the information you need to make real choices about your circumstances. Our Support Worker will advocate for you by speaking on your behalf, but not making decisions for you.
The main themes of advocacy (taken from the Scottish Independent Advocacy Alliance) are:
- Safeguarding people who are vulnerable and discriminated against or whom services find difficult to serve.
- Empowering people who need a stronger voice by enabling them to express their own needs and make their own decisions.
- Enabling people to gain access to information, explore and understand their options, and to make their views and wishes known.
- Speaking on behalf of people who are unable to do so for themselves.
There may be occasions when the person you care for also needs an Advocate. With their consent a referral can be made to an Independent Advocacy Service.
